Abundance and Hope

It’s certainly feeling a lot like November. After a long, gorgeous autumn the trees have been dropping their leaves and we have turned back our clocks. I know many in Minnesota are still scurrying around outside to finish preparing their yards for winter. I hope that you are also finding Read more…

Drawing on the ancestors for meaning and purpose in the midst of climate crisis

At the Minnesota Climate Strike A few signs were along the lines of “Adults, you have failed.” I admit, the jab at adults stung. Yet my younger self secretly harbored a similar sentiment. Actually, I’ve got those youth beat.

The Wild Unbridled Voice of Nature

I really don’t like being told I should panic. I’ve spent the last twenty years learning how to calm my panic about wars and ecological catastrophy. My body isn’t built to sustain chronic panic. Does anyone make their best decisions when panicked? I confess that I feel really challenged by Read more…

An Uncovering

Particle respirator masks were an unexpected addition to my Thanksgiving in California. Even thought we were 200 miles away from the devastating fire around Paradise the air quality was dangerously unhealthy. The media frequently referred to the California wild fires as apocalyptic. It could certainly feel like the world is Read more…

Climate, Water, and Healing Grace

Water is making the headlines big time right now. Catastrophic storms. Severe droughts. Water is giving fearsome expression to the changes in our climate. Climate can be such a vague notion. But water is tangible. Water is my way of staying focused in the complicated work of reversing climate change Read more…

Messy Transitions

I know I must be in transition when I have another one of my dreams about needing to pack up everything from college and get on a flight. Usually I have only an hour before I need to leave and haven’t begun packing. These packing-up-school dreams usually stress me out Read more…

“In-the-Bones” Understanding 2.0

You may have noticed that “in-the-bones” understanding is a favorite phrase of mine. Intellectual knowledge gradually seeps into my body. As knowledge penetrates “the bones” it becomes spiritual understanding. And like our skeleton, this spiritual understanding creates a structure that can support our whole lives. One of my healing clients Read more…

Falling in love with nature changes everything

For the past few weeks my heart has been powerfully stirred by the indigenous-led effort to protect the water, our shared water, from the Dakota Access Pipeline. The people at Standing Rock who are blocking the construction of an oil pipeline under the Cannonball River (before crossing many other rivers) Read more…

Why I recommend silly polka music to frustrated recyclers (and everyone else)

When Ed mentioned the recycling effort he is leading at church he sounded so heavy, he had the voice of Sisyphus, the Greek hero condemned to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, repeating this action for eternity. I could easily picture the Read more…

An Open-Hearted Winter Solstice Wish

Winter solstice is approaching with the promise that the dark and cold of winter will end. The turning of the seasons is our creative teacher. For me, winter always feels like a test of my resilience. Beyond winter, these are testing times. We are all experiencing a stress that is Read more…
