Anticipation Without Anxiety: what I learned from preparing for major surgery is helping me stay sane with the election.

The mood surrounding the coming election is reminding me how it felt to anticipate major surgery. It was this time of year, eleven years ago that, team of top surgeons from the Mayo Clinic would be removing a tumor that surrounded nerves and arteries at the base of my neck. Read more…

Alive, Connected, and Grieving

My big hearted friend, Have you ever sung your heart out? My daughter has a new spring in her step as she enters middle school – even with distance learning. She bustles around her room singing along to her Taylor Swift playlist. There are lots of dramatic gestures and emotion. Read more…

Are you really “at home” when you are home?

Recently I had the good fortune to spend a week near the Boundary Waters with my family. We could see the Milky Way at night and I saw shooting stars for the first time in years. Every morning we began our day with a quick plunge into the lake – Read more…

Clearing the Air

Hello dear one, I’ve been burning a lot of sage this year. I know that sounds rather cliché. But I want to share with you how I’ve been working with the sage in my garden to connect with my European ancestral roots and care for my health. Following the recommendation Read more…

Standing in Complexity

Dear heart, “You were made for these times.” I love this quote from Clarissa Pinkola Estes. It’s something that I have to keep reminding myself because these are incredible times to be alive. We appear to be in a state of potent (we hope creative) unraveling. I am reminded of Read more…

The quest & why I put flowers in my hair

I love this picture of me from one of my first dance recitals. My first two years of dance, ages 4-5, were at the Temple of the Wings in Berkeley California. We performed in the school’s courtyard surrounded by tall Greek pillars. I can hardly believe that building is real. Read more…

I could not imagine all the good that would come from fixing my mistake.

A few winters ago I was attending a water ceremony by the Mississippi River. It was a very cold morning, I was tired and fuzzy headed, and I still felt new and awkward with the group. When Sharon Day, the Ojibwe elder who leads the ceremony, handed me the sage Read more…

Complementary Healing & Complementary Activism

Dear beloved community, This has been a painful week amidst a painful time. I am struck by the depth of healing and transformation we need in our community. Justice for George Floyd is only the beginning. We also need to rebalance our community – restoring how we relate to each Read more…

The Wilderness of Quarantine

I’ve often found myself at a loss for words to express my prayers for this time. There is so much going on, how could I begin to think I could honor it all? In the past few weeks my prayer has boiled down to something simple: May all that is Read more…

How I’m finding my May Day spirit during a pandemic

What I’ve always loved about spring in Minnesota is that people emerge out of the isolation of winter. No longer sheltering inside from the cold, I will see neighbors that that I haven’t seen for months. Unbundled from our layers of parkas, scarves, and hats, we see each other anew. Read more…
